Assignment 2-1 Weekly Written Analysis 2
The current pop culture topic that interests me is Mobile phone also known as a cell phone to some people has come a long way. Starting out as a bulky, undependable phone of the past; where only the business man and the wealthy can afford this piece of expensive technology. To the present day low cost personal item with everything you need on the go.
The incredible growth of cell phone use since the early 1980s and 1990s, and the rapid advance in the functional capabilities of the cell phones themselves have created a whole new medium for popular culture in America. However children to middle-aged adults, the cell phone have become an integral part of their way of life. In early days subway and commuter-train passengers in major cities like new York, Chicago, and Boston were likely to be seen reading newspapers, books, Today, however, they are more likely to be using their cell phones, not to talk since long cell phone conversations are discouraged on public transportation but to send email, to access the Internet usually sites specially formatted for small cell phone screens, and to play video games. Students and young adults, most often women, sometimes carry on continuous, day long conversations with one or more friends via cell phone email.
Today there has been other cell phone capabilities that are popular include global positioning system GPS functions that show you where you are and how to get to your destination, and digital Camera functions that is why if there is a special events or tourist attractions, people of all ages can be seen holding up cell phones to take photographs to immediately transmit to friends, their face book page or to save for later viewing With the come to include blue tooth capabilities manuals for the playing and solving of various video games.
More and more people are buying cell phones due to the many advantages in which they provide. One of the biggest advantages of cell phones is that they are very convenient. You can clip a cell phone to your belt or carry one in your pocket or purse You can call anyone from almost anywhere. Another advantage is that people can get a hold of you fast in case of an emergency situation.

Assignment 2-2 Icon Analysis
My first Icon is The Flag Raisers Iwo Jima one of the most celebrated Iconic picture in the history of this modern era. There are six people who are Flag Raisers on this photo. Four in the front line and two in back. The front four are (from left to right) Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley, John Bradley and Harlon Block. The back two are Michael Strank (behind Sousley) and Rene Gagnon (behind Bradley). Strank, Block and Sousley would die shortly afterwards. Bradley, Hayes and Gagnon became national heroes within weeks.
Their leader and Sergeant, was Mike who got the order to climb Mt. Suribachi. Mike picked his "boys" and led them safely to the top. Mike explained to the boys that the larger flag had to be raised so that "every Marine on this cruddy island can see it." It was Mike who gave the orders to find a pole, attach the flag and "put'er up!"

This photograph was extremely popular, being reprinted in thousands of publications. Later, it became the only photograph to win the Pulitzer Prize for Photography in the same year as its publication, and came to be regarded in the United States as one of the most significant and recognizable images of the war, and possibly the most reproduced photograph of all time.
Sometimes Pictures can win awards not wars, but that is exactly what this picture did for the U.S in 1945. In 1945 on February 19th U.S has launched attack on Japan. It was the first time the Japan Emperor had been attacked on its own soil by a foreign country. The land of the battle is known as Iwo Jima, it is a small island, about 8 square miles large. The Mission for the American soldiers was to capture the airfields on island, so they could be used in the impending bombing of Tokyo.
My second Icon is Oprah Winfrey. she born as Orpah Gail Winfrey January 29, 1954 is an American television host, actress, producer, and philanthropist, best known for her self-titled, multi-award winning talk show, which has become the highest-rated program of its kind in history. She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, the greatest black philanthropist in American history, and was once the world's only black billionaire. She is also the most influential woman in the world.
The power of Winfrey's opinions and endorsement to influence public opinion, especially consumer purchasing choices, has been dubbed during The Oprah Effect. The effect has been documented or alleged in domains as diverse as book sales, beef markets, and election voting. Late in 1996,Winfrey introduced the Oprah's Book Club segment to her television show. The segment focused on new books and classics, and often brought obscure novels to popular attention. The book club became such a powerful force that whenever Winfrey introduced a new book as her book-club selection, it instantly became a best-seller; for example, when she selected the classic John Steinbeck novel East of Eden, it soared to the top of the book charts. Being recognized by Winfrey often means a million additional book sales for an author. In Reading with Oprah.
Winfrey endorsed presidential candidate Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, testing the power of the Oprah Effect in politics. This is the first time she publicly made such an endorsement. Winfrey held a fundraiser for Obama on September 8, 2007, at her Santa Barbara estate. In December 2007, Winfrey joined Obama for a series of rallies in the early primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. The Columbia, South Carolina event on December 9, 2007, drew a crowd of nearly 30,000, the largest for any political event of 2007. An analysis by two economists at the University of Maryland, College Park estimated that Winfrey's endorsement was responsible for between 423,123 and 1,596,995 votes for Obama in the Democratic primary alone, based on a sample of states that did not include Texas, Michigan, North Dakota, Kansas, or Alaska. The results suggest that in the sampled states, Winfrey's endorsement was responsible for the difference in the popular vote between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich, reported being so impressed by Winfrey's endorsement that he considered offering Winfrey Obama's vacant senate seat describing Winfrey as "the most instrumental person in electing Barack Obama president", with "a voice larger than all 100 senators combined".
My Third and final Icon is Microsoft, the software giant from Redmond, Wash., was born in 1975 as Micro-Soft, a partnership between two high school friends, Bill Gates and Paul Allen, to write software for what they regarded as the first practical computer for the consumer market, the MITS Altair 8800. When that market exploded with the introduction of the I.B.M. personal computer in 1981, the main beneficiary turned out to be the now unhyphenated Microsoft, which had developed the software for the PC's operating system — and had held onto the rights to the program.
Microsoft as a Company is probably the most recognized brand in all of technology. No other companies have been the focus of over 90% of all software exploits and attacks. Hackers write these viruses/Trojans/worms/hacks to target Microsoft. They have become the worldwide leader in OS market share and they don’t show any signs of slowing down. The only hope that the rest of them have is that when Bill Gates steps down in July that his successor will not have the drive and desire to dominate.
Microsoft Corporation is engaged in developing, manufacturing, licensing and supporting a range of software products and services for different types of computing devices. Its software products and services include operating systems for personal computers, servers and intelligent devices; server applications for distributed computing environments; information worker productivity applications; business solutions applications; computing applications; software development tools, and video games. It operates in five segments: Windows & Windows Live Division (Windows Division), Server and Tools, Online Services Division, Microsoft Business Division, and Entertainment and Devices Division. It also designs and sells hardware, including the Xbox 360 gaming and entertainment console and accessories, the Zune digital music and entertainment device and accessories, and Microsoft personal computer (PC) hardware products.

Assignment 1-3 Weekly Written Analysis 1

Current pop culture topic that interests me is The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue I believe it is one of the best artifacts of pop culture. The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is published annually by Sports Illustrated. It features fashion models wearing swimwear in exotic locations. The swimsuit issue was invented by Sports Illustrated editor Andre Laguerre to fill the winter months, a typically slow point in the sporting calendar. The first issue was published in 1964, it was credited with the making of the bikini, as the bikini became the legitimate piece of apparel. According to some, the magazine is the arbiter of supermodel succession.
The magazine started with information and news about the supermodel succession and then added information about different areas of entertainment in sports and how sports and entertainment are inter connected. In today's issues you will find information about swimsuit models, and music, pop culture, entertainment, and politics. You can read articles about sports interviews such colleges , sports reviews, up to date news about current and future stars, and you can go to the online version and see video clips, highlights from different sporting activities and listen to sound clips too. I have chosen this because this was one of the first sports magazines of its kind that brings sports and beauty in a same level and today we see hundreds of different titles of magazines that emulate The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue with different focuses and this I believe was the start of what the industry is today calls bringing the family together.
Several female athletes have appeared, though not on the cover. Steffi Graf appeared in 1997. In the 2003 issue, tennis player Serena Williams and figure skater Ekaterina Gordeeva were featured inside the magazine. Anna Kournikova appeared in an inset on the 2004 cover, and had a photo spread within its pages. In 2005, Olympic gold medallists Amanda Beard and Jennie Finch, along with Lauren Jackson and Venus Williams, were featured. Maria Sharapova appeared in an inset on the 2006 cover and had a spread inside. In spring 2006, Sports Illustrated chose music as the theme for the 2007 issue. Senior editor Diane Smith wanted 10-time (16 currently) Grammy-winner Beyoncé Knowles to pose. In 2006, Beyoncé launched a swimsuit line under her House of Deréon clothing label. Beyoncé Knowles became the first singer, and first non-model, to appear on the cover in 2007.
In 2008, NFL cheerleaders appeared for the first time. Teams include the Buccaneers, Chargers, Cowboys, Dolphins, Eagles, Falcons, Jaguars, Patriots, Raiders, Redskins and Texans. Race car driver Danica Patrick appeared in 2008. She was featured in a four-page spread set in Singer Island, Florida. For the 2010 issue, four female Winter Olympians appeared in swimsuits: Clair Bidez, Lacy Schnoor, Hannah Teter, and Lindsey Vonn as well as Ana Ivanović.

IN SOMALILAND MAN WAS KILLED OVER MIS-SPELT TEXT MESSAGE !!!
By Daily Mail Reporter
14th February 2011
A man stabbed his neighbour to death after 'mutter' was mis-spelt as 'nutter' in a text message - because of the predictive dictionary.
Josef Witkowski died after being left with more than 100 injuries following the knife attack.
Neil Brook, 33, had sent his 27-year-old friend the message - and then attacked him when he turned up at his property because of the mis-understanding.
Witkowski went round to Brook's flat in Walkden, Greater Manchester, after they had exchanged a string of abusive text messages.
Brook is now facing a lengthy spell in jail after being found guilty of manslaughter.
In advance of the visit he had fitted knives to the door and near his bathroom in his flat which hit the victim in the leg.
After suffering a knife wound, Mr Witkowski sought sanctuary in the bathroom, but Brook smashed his way through and continued the assault.
The Bolton News said Manchester Crown Court heard the victim had 104 injuries including cuts, stab wounds, bruises and slice marks on his hands, with the fatal blow piercing his heart.
A jury at Manchester Crown Court cleared Brook of murder, but found him guilty of an alternative charge of manslaughter.
The jury accepted the defendant's claim that the 'dramatic and extremely violent' attack had been provoked.
He said Mr Witkowski had gone to his flat with a knife, looking for a fight, although it was never conclusively established whether he had a knife or not.
Brook told officers at the flat: ‘I tripped him up as he came through the door and I thought: “Right you’re getting it.”
‘He had a big kitchen knife and I pulled my knife off the door and stabbed him. I just lost it and went crazy. I thought we were mates.
'All over a misunderstanding over a text. I said mutter not nutter.’
Sentencing will be at a future date, and Judge Michael Henshell said: 'Anybody looking at the facts of this case would be struck by the level of violence, whatever the level of provocation is assessed to be.
'Obviously the sentence will be a long one.
